Friday, 21st October 2022, ARCOS launched 14 new established Umusave Funds. These community funds are expected to finance small green micro projects. The launch took place in Rulindo on the occasion of the district stakeholder consultation meeting of the Agroforestry for Livelihoods project.
The 20-year project known as Agroforestry for Livelihoods project aims to build resilience to climate change and improve communities’ livelihoods through the power of agroforestry.
“Through a continuous and active collaboration with the Rulindo district and the local government at sector, cell, village and community level, has made a big project implementation progress with respect to achieving set targets.” said Dr Sam Kanyamibwa in his opening remarks.
It is important to note that this project kicked off in 2020 has a 20-year journey to go. The project aims to engage and benefit more than 20,000 households, and to plant more than 4 million trees of which about 3 million trees qualified for carbon credit, to restore more than 11,000 hectares of degraded arable land in Rulindo.
Mugisha Delice, District Division Manager, commended ARCOS for continuing to partner with the district through its various projects. “The district applauds this project because it not only halt climate change in-and-after issues but will also construct a living and satisfy communities’ daily needs.” stressed Delice.
It can be mentioned that besides tree planting, 600 farmer community groups will benefit from training on sustainable agriculture land management practices.
The new launched 14 Umusave Funds will serve 16 cells in Rulindo districts. The new launched funds will play a big role in financing community small green projects. As of now, 730 communities’ group from the Albertine Rift are benefiting from such funds through different ARCOS.
