Over 1,400 Members of ARCOS Renew Commitment to Nature and Sustainable Development

Kigali, Rwanda – The Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) celebrated a significant milestone at its Annual General Assembly on Friday, August 23, 2024, as over 1,400 members—known as Friends of Nature—gathered at the Kigali Conference and Exhibition Village. This event marked a powerful reaffirmation of their collective resolve to champion the cause of nature and sustainable development across the African Continent.

The assembly, which serves as the highest governing body of ARCOS, was not just a routine gathering but a pivotal moment for the organization. Members came together under the banner of ARCOS’ mission: “To Build a Sustainable Future for Nature and People through the Promotion of Collaborative Actions.” This ethos of unity and shared responsibility was at the heart of the discussions and decisions made during the event.

A key highlight of the assembly was the celebration of a major achievement—ARCOS surpassing the milestone of 1,000 members. This growth is a testament to the organization’s expanding influence and the growing recognition of its vital role in conservation. ARCOS’ commitment to “Collaborative Action for Nature and People” has resonated deeply, attracting a diverse and dedicated membership base.

Dr. Sam Kanyamibwa, Founder & CEO of ARCOS, reflected on the significance of this gathering, stating, “The energy and passion displayed by our Friends of Nature is truly inspiring. Their unwavering support and engagement are crucial as we continue to lead efforts for the sustainable development of the Albertine Rift. Yohn Yonazi Salehe, Chairman of the Board, also emphasized the critical role of ARCOS members, stating, “Our members are like the roots of a giant tree—deep, strong, and essential. The strength and vitality of our organization depend entirely on their dedication and resilience. As long as our roots remain strong, ARCOS will continue to grow, flourish, and make a meaningful impact on the conservation of the Albertine Rift and beyond.”

The assembly featured comprehensive presentations from the Chair of the Board of Directors and Dr. Kanyamibwa, who highlighted ARCOS’s achievements in project delivery, strategic partnerships, and membership expansion over the past year. Members also engaged in open dialogue, contributing valuable insights that will guide the organization’s future endeavors. “The successful conclusion of this year’s General Assembly not only reinforces ARCOS’ dedication to transparency and accountability but also solidifies its bonds with this growing membership community,” expressed Aline Mbabazi, a Member of ARCOS. Looking forward, ARCOS is gearing up to celebrate another significant milestone—its 30th Anniversary next year. This landmark occasion will be a moment to reflect on three decades of dedication to conservation and sustainable development, and to renew the organization’s commitment to its mission.
