ARCOS-Network together with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and GRID-Arendal are implementing the Adaptation at Altitude Programme`s regional component in East Africa (Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya and South Sudan). The overall objective of this Programme is to increase knowledge on climate change and appropriate adaptation solutions in mountain areas. Also, this knowledge will feed it into science-policy platforms to inform national, regional, and global policy processes in order to increase the resilience of both mountain communities and ecosystems to climate change.
In the context of the mountains of East Africa, RCOS-Network, the implementing partner in the region is identifying the mountain-specific adaptation solutions through stakeholder consultations. Such solutions build socio-ecological resilience, strengthen adaptive capacity and contribute to climate-resilient (development) pathways. The adaption solutions cover a broad spectrum of possible adaptation actions (including structural, technological, ecosystem or nature-based, services, educational or behavioural) and are usually combined with certain enabling factors for the solution’s successful implementation.
Under this Programme, ARCOS will also coordinate regional policy dialogues on mountain adaptation that will bring together the different stakeholders from the countries in the East Africa Community, where adaptation solutions will be discussed. The stakeholders will also have an opportunity to share experiences and lessons about the adaptation solutions being implemented in the mountain areas of the region.
