Adaptation at Altitude Programme - East Africa

Description

Climate change is disproportionately affecting mountain regions. East Africa’s last glaciers will most likely disappear this century. In addition, rainfall patterns are changing, and erosion and drought are becoming more pressing challenges in mountain areas with severe implications for water supply and local livelihoods.

Since 2021, the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS), together with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and in collaboration with the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat are implementing the Adaptation at Altitude Programme`s regional component in East Africa (Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Kenya and South Sudan).

Overview

  • Status: Ongoing
  • Project Timeline: 2020-2023
  • Project Intervention Area: East Africa
    •       The Adaptation at Altitude programme seeks to increase the resilience and adaptive capacity of mountain communities and ecosystems to climate change.

    •      As of now the programme has documented, through a booklet, 18 concrete adaptation solutions in the mountains of the East African Rift. The publication covers six of the partner states of the East African Community (EAC). It provides hands-on examples of inclusive approaches such as Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) as well as giving advice on how similar solutions can be implemented elsewhere.
