Eco-Schools Programme, Rwanda.

Description

In 2020, The Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) in partnership with Danish Outdoor Council (DOC) embarked on the implementation of Eco-Schools programme in Rwanda for a period of four years (2020-2023).

The programme implementation involves close partnership with Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB), Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), and Rwanda National Commission for UNESCO (UNESCO/CNRU), Districts, schools, communities as well as various education actors in Rwanda.

The Eco-Schools Programme, an international programme developed by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), translates the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into practice by infusing environmental education, action-based learning and student-centred teaching methods into primary and secondary education. 

And the programme’s three specific objectives are: (i)To contribute to the development of pupils’ critical thinking and active and socially responsible citizenship; (ii) To develop entrepreneurial skills that enhance employment and self-employment abilities among young generations (iii)To introduce methods for sustainable livelihoods, climate resilience and environmental protection among beneficiary schools and local communities.

  • 35 schools and 16 teacher training centres to be engaged;
  • 20,000 students to actively get involved in the program
  • 1,000 teachers trained on IVAC (Investigation Vision Action and Change ) and ARCOS BEST Approaches
  • 17,500 parents and community members trained
  • 35 green learning zones created at the school level
  • 70 income-generating projects initiated to improve livelihoods (Two at each School per year)
