COP31 represents a critical opportunity to move from commitments to implementation and strengthen efforts toward a climate-resilient future.

For ARCOS, climate action cannot be separated from biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and community resilience. Across the Albertine Rift and beyond, ARCOS is demonstrating how healthy ecosystems provide some of the most effective and sustainable solutions to the climate challenge.

Why COP31 matters

Climate change continues to threaten ecosystems, livelihoods, food security, water resources, and economic development worldwide. As countries work toward achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, COP31 is expected to place strong emphasis on implementation, climate resilience, sustainable development, climate finance, and strengthening action on the ground.

For Africa, the stakes are particularly high. Communities are increasingly facing the impacts of extreme weather events, changing rainfall patterns, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. At the same time, the continent possesses immense opportunities to lead through ecosystem restoration, renewable energy development, sustainable agriculture, and nature-based solutions.

ARCOS’ perspective: climate action starts with nature

ARCOS recognizes that resilient ecosystems are essential for climate adaptation and mitigation. Forests, wetlands, freshwater systems, and landscapes not only support biodiversity but also absorb carbon, regulate water systems, protect communities from climate shocks, and sustain livelihoods.

Through its programs, ARCOS contributes to climate action by:

Restoring degraded landscapes and watersheds.

Supporting forest conservation and sustainable land management.

Promoting climate-smart agriculture.

Strengthening community resilience to climate impacts.

Empowering youth and local communities as environmental stewards.

Advancing nature-based solutions that simultaneously address climate and biodiversity challenges.

These interventions illustrate how local action can contribute to global climate goals while improving the well-being of people and ecosystems.

Championing Africa’s voice at COP31

As conversations on climate finance, adaptation, and implementation intensify, ARCOS calls for increased investment in locally led climate solutions. Communities on the frontlines of climate change possess critical knowledge and innovative approaches that must be recognized and adequately supported.

ARCOS also advocates for stronger integration of biodiversity and climate agendas, acknowledging that neither crisis can be solved in isolation. Protecting nature is one of the most cost-effective and impactful climate strategies available today.

From ambition to delivery

The success of COP31 will ultimately be measured not by the number of commitments announced, but by the actions that follow. ARCOS believes that meaningful climate progress will require stronger partnerships, inclusive decision-making, equitable financing, and sustained investment in nature and people.

As the world gathers in Antalya, ARCOS remains committed to advancing practical, community-centered solutions that build resilience, restore ecosystems, and contribute to a climate-secure future for Africa and the world.

Together, we can transform climate ambition into lasting impact.

As the world convenes in COP31, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Antalya, Türkiye from 9-20 November 2026, governments, civil society, businesses, scientists, and communities will come together to accelerate global action on the climate crisis.
