Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project

Description

The Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) in the partnership with Global Nature Fund (GNF) secured funding from the German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumers Protection (BMUV) on behalf of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) to implement a project entitled “Living Lakes Biodiversity and Climate Project (LLBCP) ” The main objective of this project is the conservation and restoration of lakes and wetlands, promoting the protection of their biodiversity and ecosystem services. The project will be implemented in Rutsiro District, Gihango Sector, along Koko River sub-catchment.

  • Project Intervention Area: The project will be implemented in Rutsiro District, Gihango Sector, along Koko River sub-catchment.
    • Koko river catchment management plan
      development; 
    • Installation of an irrigation system;
    • Agroforestry and fruits tree nurseries development;
    • Construction of an organic manure and
      pesticides production demonstration center and
      equipment;
    • Establishment of terraces for reducing the erosion
      around Koko River;
    • Construction of a selling point for fruits and
      vegetables;
    • Providing the cooking stoves for reducing the
      emission and the quantity of firewood;
    • Scholarship for Trainees in WP III-1 Trainee
      programme;
    •  Organize workshop on Land use planning and watershed management;
    • A workshop will be organized on project site for
      presenting the baseline report (WP I, II&III). This
      event will be on project site at Koko River and
      Lake Kivu catchment;
    • Organize a conference on climate change, sustainable
      farming/fishering effects to watershed ecosystem
      and biodiversity, sustainable business;
    • Having a workshop on Sustainable agriculture land
      management and sustainable production;
    • Having a workshop of Watershed and lakes biodiversity
      sustainable management for young people;
    • Organize a workshop Lake catchment monitoring on site in Rweru-Mugesera Lake, Koko River and Lake Kivu catchment
