Nyagasenyi Remnant Forest Landscape Restoration for Improved Livelihoods and Resilience to Climate Change

Description

Kirehe District is classified as an area prone to rain shortage, late rainfall onsets, early rainfall cessations, a significant number of dry spells and is susceptible to drought. Since most people depend on rain fed agriculture for their livelihoods, there is a need to support communities to adapt to these impacts and therefore, contribute to the landscape management.

Nyagasenyi Remnant Forest and its surrounding watershed catchment cover an area of 2,842 ha and it is associated with a wetland which is connected to Cyunuzi wetland in East and Rwagitugusa wetland in the North which in turn is connected to Akagera wetland in the extreme South. The landscape is marked by overharvesting of forest resources, continued fragmentation of arable land and lack of skills on eco-agricultural practices for land restoration and livelihood improvement.

The overall objective is to enhance the conservation of Nyagasenyi natural remnant forest and its water catchment, and sustain surrounding community livelihoods through landscape restoration, integrated watershed management and eco-agricultural value chains development.
